The Aran Islands
The three Aran Islands - Inishmore, Inishmean, and Inisheer poke up out of Galway bay. These three stunningly beautiful islands are an off shore extension of the Burren and are one of the last out-posts of Gaelic civilisation where Irish is still the native language of their inhabitants.
The largest island Inishmore lies to the Northwest and is the closest to the port of Rossaveal in Galway. While Inisheer the smallest is the closest to the Cliffs of Moher and only 3 miles from Doolin harbour. A number of passenger ferries will take you across to the islands in 30 minutes. There are several crossings daily during the summer season. (weather permitting)
